They deny a pregnant woman a natural birth

News like these give an account of the long way we have to go in achieving our rights as women, such as mothers who can choose how they want to give birth even when they choose to go to a hospital. An "insumisa mother" has claimed her right to give birth naturally.

Lidia Camacho, resident in San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia), will have her third child in January. He decided to present to the hospital a birth plan, in which requested a natural birth without oxytocin, without epidural, without shaving of the vulva, in a sitting position and without episotomy. That is, it simply claimed the absence of acts that, according to WHO, are harmful or ineffective.

In the hospital where she would have to give birth, Los Arcos (Santiago de la Ribera), they have answered by denying her plan, noting that the birth protocol in that center is very different from the one she proposed: they apply shaving and oxytocin, the Episotomy "is the judgment of the person who attends the delivery" and the mother gives birth on a stretcher.

The woman wrote again justifying all her requests with the recommendations given by the World Health Organization. According to sources from the Ministry of Health, only Los Arcos and Rosell hospitals (in Cartagena) they do not attend natural births "for reasons of space".

I wonder if precisely it is not necessary less space for a woman to give birth in an upright position or that there are no drippers.

And although the news does not specify more details, I do not understand how a mother's wishes can be neglected in this way or how a hospital alleges space problems to justify her protocol. No doubt unfortunate news that the protocols are contrary to the recommendations of WHO and also inflexible.

Surely we all hear stories of mothers who decide to go to different hospitals to those who have been awarded (yes, at the last moment so that they do not "forward" them to their center, with the risks that this could entail) to try to get a delivery closer to their wishes, either because they attend in a way more natural, or because they want the epidural that your hospital does not administer according to what days.

Fortunately, many hospitals are already moving towards birth care in a more natural way. In any case, I would not like to be in the place of this mother, to whom I wish all the luck in the world in her vindication, and in her birth.
