Nitroglycerin: a hope for premature babies

It is undeniable that for different reasons, many that have to do with the lifestyle we lead, premature births are increasing.

This has become a major concern for doctors trying to reduce this type of preterm birth, some with very serious consequences for the baby's health.

All kinds of tests are done to treat premature babies. From caffeine, corticosteroids to nitric oxide.

This time, researchers at Queen's University have found in the nitroglycerin an ally to delay premature delivery by two or three weeks.

It is a nitroglycerin patch that is placed on the mother, which causes the uterus to relax preventing birth contractions.

As doctors explain, one more day inside the mother's womb can be decisive for a baby to live or die. So everything in the reach of medicine for a baby to survive, go ahead.

The most critical stage for preterm birth is between week 24 and 28 as the lungs are still forming and the brain is very susceptible to serious damage.

It seems that the solution is not new, because investigating a little on the subject I found an article of the World of the year 1994 where already it was spoken of this new method to avoid the prematurity in the babies.
